Why Forward-Thinking Companies Are Replacing Corporate Gifts With Climate Action

Generic corporate gifts get forgotten. Here is why more companies swap them for climate action, and how to do it well.

Somewhere in an office storage cupboard right now sits a box of last year's corporate gifts. Branded, well meant, and barely touched. Most teams know the feeling. The gift got sent, a few people said thank you, and within a month it was in a drawer or a bin.

Every year, companies spend heavily on client and employee gifts, and every year a large share of it is forgotten almost immediately. As budgets tighten and ESG expectations rise, more teams are asking a sharper question: what if the gift did something that lasted?

The shift away from generic gifting

This is not a fringe idea any more. Across the corporate gifting market, three themes now dominate buying decisions for 2026: sustainability, quality over quantity, and purpose. Industry trend reports describe sustainability as a baseline expectation rather than a nice-to-have, and point to a clear rise in charitable gifting, where recipients support a cause instead of receiving another physical object.

The logic is simple. A branded power bank says "we spent money on you." A climate action taken in someone's name says "we spent money on something that matters, and thought of you while doing it." One competes with every other bit of desk clutter. The other is hard to forget.

Why climate action makes a strong gift

There is real demand underneath this. In the Arbor Day Foundation's 2025 Canopy Report with The Harris Poll, 85% of Americans said companies should actively support tree planting or reforestation. A gift that channels part of your budget into exactly that is not a gamble on taste, size, or dietary preference. It lands with almost everyone.

It also does something a mug cannot: it turns a cost line into a story. Instead of "we bought 400 gifts," the message becomes "we funded a real environmental project on your behalf, and here is where."

How it works with ImpactHero

The model is straightforward. Rather than shipping an object, you attach a concrete climate action to your gifting moment. For a chosen number of employees, clients, or event guests, ImpactHero funds real projects such as tree planting, and the impact behind each gift stays checkable rather than vague.

Since our founding, our network has supported the planting of more than 3.6 million trees with over 600 companies, according to our September 2025 Impact Report. The mechanic is always the same: a normal business moment, in this case a gift, funds a specific, audit-ready action.

Three ways teams use it

1. Employee gifting. Instead of the same hamper for everyone, each team member gets a personalised note that trees have been planted in their name, with a link to the project. It scales cleanly across a whole workforce and reads as generous rather than generic.

2. Client gifting. A climate gift signals shared values without the awkward guesswork of taste. For clients with their own ESG targets, it can even support the story they tell their own stakeholders.

3. Team events and milestones. Company anniversaries, sales kick-offs, and end-of-year celebrations become moments to fund something lasting, with a shared impact number the whole team can rally around.

Doing it well, not just doing it

A climate gift is only as good as the honesty behind it. A few principles keep it credible.

Be specific. "We planted trees for our team" is weaker than "we funded 500 trees across projects in Tanzania and Kenya, here is the link."

Do not oversell it. Supporting reforestation is a genuine contribution, not a cancelling-out of your company's whole footprint. Say what you did, plainly. This also keeps you on the right side of the EU's new environmental-claims rules (EmpCo) that apply from September 2026.

Make it personal. The note matters. A named, human message turns an abstract action into a gift someone actually feels.

Start planning before the year-end rush

The busiest gifting season arrives fast, and the best programs are planned early. If corporate gifting is on your Q4 list, now is the time to decide whether this year's budget buys another round of objects, or something your recipients will remember.
